Thoughts on MSN Spaces

MSN Spaces is in Beta now. Yeah I got it yesterday. I am glad I grabbed my nickname: coolkid in the URL. It is a popular nick somehow.

10MB space is not bad. Music list is a wonferful service but I haven't used it yet. The access speed...worse than Blogger.com but much better than my blog space in China.

RSS? Haven't found it yet. I noticed the appearance of "trackbacks" though.

Finals kick in within two weeks...

BTW I grabbed MSN Messenger 7.0 beta. Anyone get it?

Final thoughts: MSN spaces probably hates Firefox. Hmmm...

writing can be pain

I don't hate writing.

I only hate it when I am forced to write, like this pharmacy survey essay.

I feel so helpless when I write it. This is just a 3 page long essay. Some people can make it in hours. To me, I have to spend days on it. It is not a hard essay to write.

I am a perfectionist. (thanks to Sara for teaching me this word) I am so afraid that my essays aren't good enough. I put too much pressure when I do essay homework. There're so many times that I told myself not to make myself nervous. However, I just can't help doing it.

And, especially this essay. My professor said paper won' t be acceptable if she finds more than 3 errors in it. I always get like 8 errors per page. I feel like doomed to fail on this essay. All I can do is to eliminate errors at the best of my knowledge.

If no pen, it is just a laptop

During the Thanksgiving holiday, I put my tablet on my messy desk, plugging it in and putting a mouse in its USB port. Then, I found myself using it without the pen for three days, and so naturally.

It has been downgraded to a laptop, same as the old Dell Inspiron! Sometimes I even forget this is a tablet. I just use it as a laptop with a smaller set of keyboard.

Some guys were talking about convertibles can be the death of tablets several days ago. I didn't take serious at the discussion. Now I realized that the slate has the true spirit of tablets--completely handwriting computing.

I still love my toshiba. It is a great machine and I like to recommend it to anyone. But right now I have to reconsider the idea of convertibles. It is easy to use, but it loses the true spirit of tablet PCs.

Maybe next time I plan to get a tablet, I will definitely choose a slate.

I like publishing things, from my kindergarten doodles to my personal philosophy. This summer my friend Buggie (a Chinese girl living in a nearby city called Provo) introduced "blog" to me. Suddenly I fell in love with this thingy and found myself 5 BSP (blog service provider) for the different service they have.

Now I narrowed down to three. Two are Chinese and one (blogspot.com) is English. Mainland China blocked all the blogspot.com domain names so this blog is inaccessible to my Chinese friend. Since most of my American friends (real life ones) are not as geeky as I am, they don't read blogs and some don't even know what a blog is.

So this blog is more like a place to practise my English writing. My professor can pick out 8 grammatic and usage errors per page from my essays and I feel awful. My parents always say: "OK, honey you are good enough after staying one year and eight months in the States." But I still feel awful. So I begin to put my English writing on this blog as practice

Nobody will bother to read a crappy blog consisting with daily essay practice. I like comments though, but my blogs are not good at drawing attention from other people. My Chinese blogs are a bit better since I can use the language freely to express my thought. Still they are not popular.

After I got my tablet I decided to blog about it, like all those great tablet bloggers do--JK on the Run, Tablet heps and TabletPc blog. These blogs are in my blogline and Omea Reader subscription and I read them on a daily basis. Tablets are amazing but they never manage to make their way to the mass market. I like to show people who never know about tablet how amazing it is and how it can change my lifestyle. So I blog.
I am so glad this blog finally gets some readers. Thanks to Iggy and Paulie for reading my blog and supporting me. Also thanks to those who already read my blog yet not come up with comments.

Hope you guys enjoy my articles and don't get mad if I don't use English properly.

OneNote Recording sucks

I tried OneNote recording function today on my survey of pharmacy class. It is the smallest class I've ever had--a small lecture room, 15 people and 1 professor. I figured it was a perfect enviroment to try the recording function.

I actually recorded the whole lecture, including my silly question and many jokes that my fellow classmates made. I was quite dissappointed with the result when I played back. It was like--huge noise in the background. Later I figured out where the sound came from--the noise the pen made when I wrote on my tablet!!! It almost covered all other humans' voices--professor's and students'. Even when I didn't write, the lecture recording was distorted like static noise. Certainly I won't expect the machine can replace my old old tape recorder.

What can I do to improve the OneNote recording's quality? A new microphone? Or just turn to another recording software? By the way I DO see the sould quality option in the recording setting. Will it help?

Maybe I will try.

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS - It's not quite sleight of hand, but starting a new city government from scratch is something akin to a magic act. The City Council-elect here - in what will be the state's newest town come January - is grappling with setting up everything, from animal control to a zoning commission, within six weeks. But here's the kicker: The city-to-be doesn't have any money. Not yet, anyway. Because Cottonwood Heights is not yet officially incorporated and its council is not yet sworn in, the city has no legal or taxing power. Nonetheless, come Jan. 3, it must open its doors, at an address still to be determined, and provide such things as police and courts, filling pot holes and plowing snow. "It's like getting married and starting out with nothing," mused City Councilman Don Antczak. "We're wrestling with our options." It may not be a real city yet, but the council is acting like it is. Elected officials have twice posted agendas 24 hours in advance of meetings, as outlined in Utah statutes. But according to the state Attorney General's Office, the law doesn't apply until they're sworn in. "There is a little bit of a chicken-and-egg problem," said Thom Roberts, assistant attorney general. "They have to follow the law that applies to them now. Any vote they were to take, would just be a vote of private citizens." Nonetheless, the council-elect is sticking to the law as if it were duly sworn, said Mayor-elect Kelvyn Cullimore. For example, officials want to hire a city manager by Dec. 7, although they can't make it official until after Jan. 3. "People have to understand that we don't have funding," he said. "But Zions Bank is prepared to lend us tax-anticipation money." With those funds, as well as agreements with private and public entities to defer payments for up to six months, the council next month will rent office space and contract for public-safety and public-works services, the mayor-elect said. When property and sales taxes do begin to roll in, Cottonwood Heights expects to receive about $6 million in its first six months of operation - the equivalent of $12 million a year. Some municipal services will be contracted from Salt Lake County, which provided the same services before Cottonwood Heights residents voted overwhelming to form their own town. "We wanted local control of planning and zoning and more control over our taxes and budget," said Councilman Bruce Jones. "There is a sense of controlling our own destiny, and that has created a lot of excitement."

I am not a good blogger. I am always too tired to organize my ideas together and put them on my blog. Another barrier is my language. I do have some popular Chinese blog but I feel so short with my English writing ability and I actually can't blog with my style.

Sara tried my Tablet

Yesterday, I let Sara (my great lab partner) try my tablet briefly right before the organic chemistry class began. She is not a geek person definitely but she actully likes it. Sara tried writing her name and some weird chemistry names on TIP and TIP got them all right. She's like: "Wow this machine is cool. It actually likes my handwriting."

I haven't let other people try my tablet yet. Call me selfish, haha.

silly stockroom girl

Today on lab, I found my racket of tubes disappeared from my drawer. So I went to the stockroom asking if they got mine by any chance. Because I thought I left somewhere in the lab and some guy returned it to the stockroom.

My expression was perfect. The only mistake I made was that I asked the stockroom girl for "sacket" instead of "racket".

The girl was in my organic chemistry class, over talktive type. She was extremely impolite to me, well, easy, because I didn't speak a good English. I was offensed by her attitude and almost gave her a finger.

Well, maybe she didn't know how hard it is for a non English speaker to live in America. I try my best to improve my language ability. Don't you native speakers feel the challenge and pressure I have? If you are satisfied with my language, then be patient or quit this job, let those who are willing to listen to me do this job.

Birthday, Hotmail, Tablet and Firefox 1.0

Just celebrated my 23rd birthday yesterday. My cousin always says that a woman should not celebrate any birthday after she becomes 20. Well, she is true. I am so dissappointed to find that I am no more 22 and that I waste another year.

Can't remember what I did in the last year. A trip to China, making some friends, getting a new laptop and getting several As and Bs in college. That's all.

My Hotmail account has been upgraded to 250 MB. For quite a long time I was struggling with the storage limitation. Now I don't have to worry about it any more.

Toshi works well. I wish it has a longer battery life. I hate calculating the battery life during my busy days. Inking emails is my greatest hobby right now. I use Outlook to do my outcoming email (but not incoming) and write most emails by handwriting. My friends actually like it very much. Another activity that I am engaged in is to ink MSN Messenger. I even doodled a crab and a turtle and sent them to my friend, which is not so polite in Chinese culture. My parents enjoyed the inky chat because they feel like talking with me face to face when they see my writing.

Finally, Firefox 1.0 got out. It shared my birthday( definitely not in the same year). I downloaded it in the first thing yesterday and found the Mozilla website down for quite a long time so I got it from a mirror site. So far I love it. Moreover I hacked it with the bat file provided by portable firefox and put the scrapbook extension on it. Later I will put on adblocker.

bought a tablet PC

I bought a Toshiba Portege M200 last week through Newegg. The spec is Intel Centrino 1.5GHz, 512 MB RAM, 60GB HDD.

So far I have satisfied with this machine. It is light, small and fast. But the point is that I can write on its screen.

I bring it to school for taking note of my lectures. To my surprise, very few of my classmates shows interest in it. Most people take it as a regular laptop. Only one asked me to try on the machine.

One of my friends got totally shocked when I turned it to tablet mode. I figured she never saw a laptop with a "neck". Another girl asked me if this machine used "touchscreen".

Until now, I have only seen three tablets in my campus, a compaq slate and two toshiba convertible. if count mine in then there will be four. My university have more than 20,000 students. So tablet is not popular in the U of U.

Where is the dell? It is lying in front of my TV set. It has been jobless for a week. Poor old thing.

Retire my laptop?

A regular in my lunch-chattie-gang (Sorry, I forgot her name) laughed at my laptop when I brought it to school. She must think it is an antique in IT field. Well, my laptop is not that bad. It runs on P3 900MHz and 512MB RAM, which is strong enough to run Windows XP Pro.

Anyway I have to admit it is an old machine (it is 3 yr old and beyond warranty). Noisy fans , short battery life, busted speakers and on-and-off USB 1.1 ports really annoy me. I brought it to school 3 times and every time I had backache for a week. 10 pounds machine+AC adapter (which is among the recent Dell recalling list ) weight means I put one of my dumbbells in my backpack. So I swear I would never bring it to school.

But I need a computer in school. I am an ESL college student and a health care professional wannabe, which means I can't live without dictionaries and encyclopedia. Althought I can use PCs in school's computer labs, I hate the environment since they never clean rooms and machines. That's why I need a laptop with me.

The problem is that I still love my old laptop. Well, it has good display that I can play Age of Mythology on it. Also, it is pretty stable despite all the dissatisfication i meantioned above. I can't justify retiring it merely because its "age". It is just another ol' tough guy.

Recently, I am very attracted by Tablets. I think they are pretty cool and useful, but I don't really have the budget to bring it home. They are still expensive, aren't they? Some people would say there' re a lot of slim models on market, but to me they have no difference from my ol' Dell, just "younger" and "faster", which I don't really care.

It is most likely that I will save for a Toshiba M205 in the end of this year. Well, what a luxury!

Begin to read Yao Ming's autobiograph

Just got Yao: A Life in Two Worlds from Whitmore Library. As the most famous Chinese celebrity in sports world, Yao Ming makes his way out in NBA. He is an icon, not only in China, but also in the whole wide world.

Believe or not, I have many links from this famous guy, literally. We have the same surname, we are from the same city and we came to the US just several months apart. My Dad always jokes about this: we like to know everything about two Yaos: Yao Ming and my daughter. My friends always make fun of me: Are you related to Yao Ming? I say no. If I were, I would be 6'9" tall instead of being 5'5", though I play basketball too.

When Yao was in Shanghai Sharks, my father and I enjoyed watching his games every Saturday night. I knew this big guy would make something big. And he did. Unlike the other two Chinese players in NBA, Yao is overwhelming popular in the US. Cultural barrier doesn't even exist to him. Maybe Shanghainese are born multi-culturally. Everybody talks about him, from his girlfriend to his angry towards Chinese basket authorities in Athens.

I always wonder what makes Yao Ming so successful? Is it because he is a handsome, smart and humorous giant? Or is it because he is from an ancient country? Maybe I can get the answer after I read thru Yao's book.

Dell sent me a new AC adapter

Brand new one~! The AC adapter I am using is worn and, what is more important, is in the Dell Adapter recalling list. That's why Dell sent me a new one for free.

But I am still angry because I have used the adapter for almost two years without knowing its security defect.

MSN Messenger 7.0 Got Screwed

Citing a security hole in one of the new features in MSN Messenger 7.0, Microsoft this week suspended the beta of the product, according to various reports, so it can rethink the product's feature set. MSN Messenger 7.0 includes a feature called Winks that lets MSN Messenger users send each other animated graphics and sounds. However, that feature could be used maliciously, so it's been stripped from a more recent beta version of the product which will be made available to testers next week.

In order to protect testers against any potential problems, all MSN Messenger 7.0 users will be forced to "downgrade" to the publicly shipping version 6.2 of the product when they log onto the MSN Messenger service Thursday.

Microsoft still intends to ship the Winks feature in the final version of MSN Messenger 7.0, which should ship publicly in early 2005. Other new features of MSN Messenger 7.0 include a new UI for the contacts window, a Nudge feature for getting the attention of other users, and the deeper integration of various MSN services into the product.

What can Gmail do for me?

My friend Fred gave me a Gmail invitation in July. At first I didn't use it a lot because I was satisified with my 100MB yahoo account. Later I found it was simply awesome: huge storage, anti-spam and handy labels. And it is fast!!

Here is how I use Gmail:

(1) My online e-zine library
I subscribe many online e-zines and newsletters. After I receive the first issue from them, I set labels and filter for each of them. So they won't get mixed.

(2) Online newspaper
Here I would like to introduce a superb Chinese news hub called Netcull (www.netcull.com). It provides RSS feeds but I like its email subscription better. After I subscribe Netcull's service, it will send me emails three times a day to inform me the latest news. In most cases, I get three mails in a row because of the time gap between Utah and China. But it doesn't matter. Smart Gmail has put them together in one coversation and sorted them by date. It is so handy for me to check some old news.

(3)My to-do list
I spend most of my free time in school in computer lab. Sometimes I would get a good idea. But I don't have my pocket notebook at hand. (I have a PDA but it works so bad that I have given it up.) I will send myself emails to list ideas and thoughts. Gmail is so fast to handle text information

(4) See what other people are reading?
www.Furl.net is a good place. It can be your online resource database. And you can also see what other users put in their Furl databae. I sort out some users that have similar taste as I have and subscribe their furl.net list into Gmail account. A daily report will be sent to me about what these users "has furled" in the last 24 hours. I can find lots of interesting and useful stuff from this report, for example, a funny website or a great new service.Of course you can subscribe it with any email service. But I am a big fan of Gmail's labels and filters.

(5)It is a gift!!!
Oh yeah, Gmail has given me bunches of invitations. The invitation thingy is like a cup. I use it and then Gmail will fill it up. Last Saturday I sent out three and serveral hours later the invitation number became 6 again!!

I send Gmail invitations to my friends as a gift. But before I send it out I will ask them first. Believe or not, several people in my friend circle don't want a 1GB mail service. That's OK. Gmail invitation is a treasure. It only belongs to those who really need it.

Something to add:
My schedule keeps me in campus in most of weekdays. I think of bringing my laptop to school but it is too heavy. So I have to use computer lab instead. That's why I need online service so much, like a stable webmail service or online RSS reader like Bloglines.

What else can Gmail do for us? Anyone has any new idea? I think it can be a online storage if Gmail is more stable.

• Epithelium

• Nervous Tissue

Epithelium
--Thin sheet layer of cells, connected to each other tightly. Always on the surface and exposed to outer environment.
--no blood vessels can be found.

Connective tissue
-- Never on surface. Don’t have lots of cells.
--Tons of blood vessels connect these tissues together to supply blood.

Muscle
--Big long cells
--Can be contracted (shortened).

Nervous tissue
--Specialized cellular tissue, can be short or long
--Function: communication

Protection, absorption, secretion, containment, excretion.

Classification of epithelial tissues
Cell shape
Squamous (Flat) = scale like

Cuboidal (Cubic) = cubic like

Columnar =big tall cells
Number of layers
Simple: single layer of cells
Stratified: more than one layer of cells, or multi-layer.

Simple Epithelial Tissues

Simple Squamous epithelium
Structure: single layer of flat cells,
Distribution: endothelium: inside the blood vessels or heart.
Mesothelium: in the body cavity or coeloms.
Function: diffusion layer
make flowing of blood better and smoother
Non-nervous rubber and friction.

Simple Cuboidal epithelium

Structure: single layer of Cuboidal cells
Distribution: glands
Function: secretion

Simple columnar epithelium

Structure: single layer of columnar cells
Distribution: lining of digestive system (such as stomach)
Function: absorption and protection

Pseudostratified columnar epithelium

Structure: every cell attached to basal lamina
Distribution: lining air passage to lung
Function: air exchange/ filtering system.

Stratified Squamous epithelium
Structure: multilayer flat cells in the surface, cuboidal ones in the deep
Distribution: outer layer of skin
Funciton: protection

Stratified columnar epithelium

Structure: multilayer of columnar cells in the surface.
Distribution: isolated places
Function:

Transition epithelium

Structure: changeable shape
Distribution: urinary system
Function: protection, shape changing.

Beijing Haidian People's Court yesterday held a sessionin a case that involves Mr. Wu Mingming, a furniture manufacturer, who had bilkedtwo students' parents of about RMB180000 by pretending he was a secretary of an EducationMinister in China. One of the students submitted a photo taken with a mobile phoneas evidence. The photo is a small one, but it shows one of the parents handing moneyto the defendant, Mr. Wu. The parent said he took the photo because Mr. Wu refusedto give him an invoice, and he was afraid he would be cheated.
So far, no judgment has been made in the case. This is the first documented time that mobile phone photos have been submitted as evidence in a court in Beijing.

Thirty-nine year old Gayle Laverne Grinds of Florida died after rescue workers attemptedto remove her from a couch she had become attached to. They couldn't get her skinto separate from the couch, so they put the couch in a trailer and hauled her behinda truck to the hospital.

"I tried to take care of her the best I could,"said 54-year-old Herman Thomas, who lived with Grinds in the duplex apartment in GoldenGate, south of Stuart. "I tried to get her to get up, but it wouldn't do no good."
He said the woman that he called his wife hadn't been off the couch for six years.No record of their marriage could be found.
"I wish I could have pulled her off the couch, but she wouldn't let me," he said,covering his face and sobbing.
Inside the home, the floor and walls were matted with feces, and trash was strewnacross the floors, some which were bare concrete. Furniture was toppled, and pictureswere knocked off walls.
Atlas said sheriff's detectives will look for potential "negligence issues" relatedto her care and death.

why they cutting down the tree?

My neighbor called a tree company to cut a pine tree in front of their balcony. I don't think it is a good move. At least the tree can give them some shade in the heat of summer.

High temperature is still around 90s. It is already August...

Suddenly, RSS becomes popular. I assume it becomes popular because more and more people begin to write blogs. I choose RSS cuz I get fed up with the ads on the news websites. They are most annoying things when I do my surfin'.

First I downloaded Sharpreader, then I found I had to install M$ .NET framework. I just wanted to keep M$ products to the least proportion. So I skipped Sharpreader.

Then I installed freeware Awasu. It is a Japanese thing. So I thought it might work with Chinese language encoding rss feeds. BUT...The silly software was way too complicated and refused to work on Chinese encoding. I kicked it out of my puter instantly.

Finally I decided to give Chinese Rssware to try. Encoding was working smoothly but the software itself is just too simple. I found it extremely hard even to add a new feed.

Now, I have to use the Firefox RSS extension SAGE and Miranda IM RSS extension to read the RSS feeds. Firefox works well but it doesn't have the real time news pop-up.
Miranda IM thing is eazy to use too but it can't handle HTML code.

Just back from a two day trip of Provo,UT. It is a relative young city: college town, small biz's paradise.

I visited BYU. It is way more crowded than Uni of Utah. Don't know why people there are soooo happy. Maybe exams are all over?

刚从Provo度了两天假回来。对这个城市感觉不错。整个一大学城，还是很适合做小生意的地方。
到杨百翰大学逛了一圈，发现那边人好多，比犹大的人多不知道几倍。不知道为什么每个人都那么高兴？难道是考试结束了？？
